The brief
The family had outgrown a store bought table that was already sagging at the seams. They wanted one table that would carry them through birthdays, homework, holidays and the next twenty years.
The challenge
The dining space is open to the kitchen with a walkway on one side, so the table had to seat eight without blocking traffic. A pedestal would have limited seating, and four legs would have left someone straddling a leg at every meal.
How we built it
- Trestle base set inboard so nobody sits on a leg
- Breadboard ends to keep the top flat through prairie humidity swings
- Matching bench on the window side to keep the walkway clear
- Hardwax oil finish that can be spot repaired at home
The result
Delivered and levelled in a single afternoon. The bench tucks fully under the top, which gave the family back most of the floor space they were worried about losing.
“We waited years for the right dining table and it was worth it. Ten of us around it every Sunday and it still looks like the day it arrived.”
